The Mazda 6 lineup gains more variety with each passing year. For its second year, Mazda added a five-door hatchback - the only in this class - and a five-door wagon (V6 only) to join the Chevy Malibu Maxx and the overpriced Subaru Legacy and Volkswagen Passat, just as the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable are walking off stage. For 2005, the 6's third year, the V6's 5-speed automatic got upgraded to six speeds (the most gears in this class), adding further exclusivity even as Mazda was already one of the few to offer a V6 with manual shift.
A less welcome change was the needless increase in customizing options. Previously, i designated 4-cylinder models, s stood for V6. That's still the case, but Mazda now feels the need to also stratify by base, Sport, and Grand Touring models. The hatchback comes as a Sport only; the wagon only comes as an s model, etc. Basically, Sport models generally add side airbags, power driver's seat, spoiler, fog lights, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Grand Touring adds automatic, heated leather seats, power sunroof, BOSE stereo with CD changer, and removes the spoiler and fog lights. The options list is relatively long.
