If there's an ongoing theme to the TL, Acura's variation on the Honda Accord, it's the concept of more. More leather and wood, more nice stuff, more size, more power. At one time, all Hondas only had four cylinders, so the first edition of this Acura, then called Vigor, was content with five. The next Accord got a V6, so the Acura (now TL) gained a better one. Then the Accord grew a bunch and got stronger than ever, so the TL grew in tandem, dropped the five-cylinder entirely, sprouted a whole new V6 with 25 more horses, then injected another 35 on top of that in a special high-performance Type S edition shortly after. With the Accord raising the bar every year, you do what you can to stay ahead.This time, Acura concentrated on performance, and how could they not? You're not even in the game these days unless you have serious go-power, and on that matter Acura is more serious than ever. Now that the plebian Honda is packing an astronomical 240 horses, Acura shoved into the TL a total of 270 (the original had 176) along with a 24% stiffer body, the largest and widest wheels of any Acura in history, and a standard features list so extensive - including a groundbreaking stereo - that there's only one item on the option sheet. How long can they keep this up? |
